There are camera leaks, and then there are camera leaks. The Canon 90D is falling in the latter category with the complete leak of the entire announcement scheduled for August 28. And while we’ll need it in our hand, the takeaway is Canon has a worthy successor to the wildly popular 80D.
What is the Canon 90D Price?
The MSRP is set at $1199 for the body, and $1599 with an 18-135mm IS kit lens. It places the Canon 90D right in the old 80D price range. That’s a solid price when you consider the absurd spec bumps the new APS-C DSLR from Canon will enjoy.
When is the Canon 90D Release Date?
That’s about the only unknown at this point. Everything down to the brochure of the camera leaked. It’s not available for preorder quite yet, but you can go ahead and have your bookmarks set for the usual suspects of Amazon, B&H, and Adorama which should go live once the announcement kicks off tomorrow.
What are the New Features of the Canon 90D?
The two standout features will be the 32.5 megapixel CMOS sensor and the debut of 4K video on a Canon APS-C DSLR. It finally happened. And it’s uncropped. Yeah, I had to check the leaked brochure a few times to make sure it was a Canon camera. Sure enough. 4K video at 30fps. Yes, you’ll have the usual crop of an APS-S sensor, but nothing which will nerf the camera.
Autofocus. Depending on your stance on Canon’s Eye AF, you’ll either think this is a feature or just something tacked on to compete with Sony and others. The AF system features 45 cross-type points and Canon’s renowned Dual Pixel AF. This is listed to work with video, but the devil will be in the details here. Spot AF, Face Priority, and Continuous AF are the modes to choose from with nearly 100% vertical and 88% horizontal coverage of the sensor.
LCD Screen. Vloggers rejoice. The variable angle LCD screen remains from the 80D. Why this feature isn’t on every camera manufactured baffles me, but at least it’s here. It’s a 1040k-dot, 3.0-inch screen that can flip forward to help vloggers and solo camera operators frame their shot.
Still Photography. ISO ranges from 100-25600 (expandable up to 51200). Burst shooting caps out at 10 frames per second through the viewfinder and 11 frames per second in live view. Shutter speed is an eye-popping 1/16000 – 30 sec with bulb in what Canon deems the creative zone, and a basic zone of 1/8000 – 1 second.
The Canon 90D shoots both RAW and JPEG with image sizes ranging from 6960 x 4640 (L) down to 3742 x 2320 (S).
Videography. The 4K video records in MPEG-4 / H.264 in both uncropped and cropped at 30fps. HD video can shoot up to 120fps. Video limits are set at just under 30 minutes when a new file will automatically be created.
Mount and Processor. It’s a DSLR so the Canon EOS 90D will feature the EF/EF-S lens mount and come with the latest DIGIC 8 image processor.
Battery. Rechargeable LP-E6N rated ar 1860 shots.
Storage. One UHS-II card slot.
Canon 90D Promo Video
If you need a little promo video in your life, Canon is happy to oblige:
Overall, the spec sheet reads like a Canon fan wishlist. Yes, we want to see actual 4K video in action to check for crop and AF issues, but at first glance, the Canon 90D looks to be a solid holiday option for aspiring photographers and vloggers.
