Canon Suffers Major Leak of EOS 90D and EOS M6 Mark II

Canon leaks EOS 90 D and EOS M6 Mark II

So much for surprises. There were rumblings of new Canon cameras, and now we have confirmation thanks to leaks of official brochures and promotional videos. Ooops…

For the past two years, it’s been a steady drumbeat of mirrorless cameras. All major manufacturers are rushing out new models to compete with each other on the megapixel count and feature list. Canon? Say hello to the Canon EOS 90D. Once it becomes official, it will replace the popular EOS 80D.

Don’t worry mirrorless fans. Canon hasn’t forgotten you. The EOS M6 Mark II is set to become the flagship M-series camera. It could stand it after the nerfed M50

What is the Canon EOS 90D

It’s an APS-C model complete with the flip-out screen. If there were a camera model YouTubers adored at one point, it was the 80D. But, it had its limitations. Namely, the lack of 4K. That’s gone as Canon has suddenly awoke to the fact consumers demand 4K in cameras which don’t act as a second mortgage. It should have been released three years ago, but glad you could join us Canon.

The promotional video has leaked for the 90D, and it’s stacked with features:

Canon EOS 90D Features

Pulling the feature list from the video works out to the following:

  • 32.5mp APS-C Sensor
  • 45 AF points (all cross-type)
  • DIGIC 8
  • 10fps shooting
  • 4K at 30p/25p
  • FullHD at 120p/100p
  • Optical viewfinder & face detection
  • 100% viewfinder coverage
  • 220K dot RGB + IR metering
  • Touchscreen Vari-Angle LCD
  • Dust & water-resistant
  • Battery grip BG-E14

Thirty-two megapixels and what looks like uncropped 4K video? Someone at Canon HQ has been listening. Dual Pixel AF seems likely. Battery life should be solid over mirrorless competitors. The sensor feels like a shot across the bow of both Nikon and Sony. Sony is already rumored to have two APS-C cameras ready to be announced at the end of the month. Both will need a killer feature to break through the gauntlet Canon is about to throw down.

Canon EOS 90D Release Date

It should join the EOS M6 Mark II for an August 26 announcement date. The exact date it will become available is unknown, but before the holiday season is a safe bet.

Pricing

TBD but an educated guess places it in the range of the current EOS 80D.

What is the Canon EOS M6 Mark II

The second leaked camera is the Canon EOS M6 Mark II. Like the 90D, most of the promotional material has leaked, so we get a nice look at the specs and the video of it in action.

Oh, I do believe I want one. Canon is bringing the heat with both cameras, but the M6 Mark II looks incredible. We can expect it to land in the hands of vloggers across YouTube.

Canon EOS M6 Mark II Features

  • 32.5mp APS-C Sensor
  • DIGIC 8
  • 14fps
  • RAW burst to 30fps
  • Up to ISO 26500
  • Eye detect AF
  • AF capable down to -5 EV
  • 4K video
  • FullHD at 120fps
  • Removable OLED viewfinder

Yeah, the video implies uncropped 4K video. Why is that a big deal? Canon’s flagship mirrorless severely hampered its video capability with a crop factor. The APS-C cameras signal the company has figured out a workaround and it should no longer be an issue.

Canon EOS M6 Mark II Release Date

It has a relatively firm date of August 26 with availability in time for the holiday season.

Pricing

TBD. The current generation M6 is on sale for $700 with a regular price of $900. The latter figure is a safe bet for the M6 Mark II.

Overall Canon is showing serious love to APS-C fans. Two cameras with new sensors and usable 4K video. It’s not every day you see Canon shove this amount of features into cameras that are closer to the beginner scale over the professional variants. It’s a welcome change of pace.
