The phenomenon that is Minecraft shows no signs of slowing down. Mojang announced new milestones for the massive Minecraft community this morning. Sales have topped 121 million with 55 million unique monthly players.

The tweet says 122 million while the press release says 121 million. We’ll stick with 121 million for now. Whatever the case, it’s still a lot.
The last time we heard sales numbers from Minecraft was last June when sales hit 106,859,714 and counting.
I rounded the number up to 107 million and subtracted it from 122 million. That leaves you 14 million with nine months between June and now. On average, Minecraft is selling 1.5+ million copies every single month. That’s across all platforms. PC, consoles and mobile.
Since Microsoft bought the folks behind Minecraft (Mojang), 70+ million new copies of the sandbox game have been sold. That was $2.5 billion well spent. And Microsoft’s decision to keep supporting Minecraft on a host of other platforms was a smart one.
55 million unique monthly players also make Minecraft one of the top gaming communities in the world. But not quite the biggest. That honor belongs to League of Legends which is estimated to have 100+ million players active every month. Still, only a select few games can boast of active communities larger than 10 million.
Are you one of those 55 million players exploring and building virtual worlds each month?
