With Citizenfour coming off an Oscar win, it’s little surprise Hollywood wouldn’t go for another critically acclaimed film on the Edward Snowden story. And get ready for a bit of embellishing. Snowden is directed by Oliver Stone.
Do Americans care about a surveillance state? Well, if we could collectively remember what we had for dinner two days ago, maybe. Seeing as we can’t, the story has blown over and we have moved on to the latest mobile app. Sad, but true.
Open Road Films has released the first still from ‘Snowden’ showing Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Edward Snowden. The film is currently shooting in Munich, before it starts globetrotting. You can bet Hong Kong will be heavily featured in the film.
With Levitt onboard, I’m already hyped for the film. The rest of the cast just gases the hype meter. Shailene Woodley, Melissa Leo, Zachary Quinto, Tom Wilkinson, Timothy Olyphant, Rhys Ifans and Joely Richardson.
Toss in Oliver Stone and it could be an intriguing film at the very least. Who know, it may even get people talking about surveillance overreach again.
Stone’s producing partner Moritz Borman is producing the film along with Eric Kopeloff and Philip Schulz-Deyle. The script, co-written by Stone, is based of Luke Harding’s ‘The Snowden Files: The Inside Story of the World’s Most Wanted Man.’
The film releases in the United States on December 25, 2015. Happy Holidays, your government is tracking your every move.
What do you think? Is the cast enough to get you in the theater? The promise of Oliver Stone amping the entertainment factor? Sound off about the movie.
