New multiplayer modes. New maps. New tweaks and extras for SnapMap. Bethesda showed off what’s coming to DOOM in the next week today.
But it’s missing what many want the most. DOOM campaign DLC.
I’m nearing the end of my DOOM playthrough and am blown away. I don’t like to throw the word perfect around when it comes to games (except maybe Rocket League), but DOOM’s story is damn close. From the silent protagonist to the fast-paced, in your face action to the awesome music. I love every single minute of it. Who else waits for the music to finish playing after each mission before continuing?
DOOM shows the strength of a silent protagonist in 2016. I’m not saying every game needs one. Far from it. But developers shouldn’t feel forced to pump voice lines into the main character.
And the music. It can’t be praised enough. Mick Gordon did a phenomenal job bringing new life into the iconic themes.
In SnapMap we trust?
The above trailer gives us a sneak peek at the improvements and updates coming to SnapMap. The biggest for campaign fans? Customizable weapon wheel functionality. We can now carry and select multiple weapons. And that’s not all.
30 new hell-themed modules, an expanded weapon list, jump pads with logic, a new demon and a host of improvements across SnapMap. I haven’t dived into SnapMap as much as I would have liked, but I can’t wait to see what DOOM fans can cook up in the coming weeks.
Let’s talk about the DLC we are getting
First, the free content.
Two new multiplayer game modes. Exodus is a one-flag CTF mode with moving bases and flags. Sector revolves around capturing and holding modes to control points. Each mode works on the maps DOOM launched with and new maps coming as part of DOOM’s premium DLC model.
Now the premium.
Three new multiplayer maps, a new playable demon called The Harvester, a new weapon, new equipment, armor, hack modules, taunts and more.
I know. Premium DLC sucks. Especially now that big-time developers are moving away from it. Halo 5 spoiled me on buying DLC. I used not to frown at paid DLC. Like most, I just saw it as an inevitable part of multiplayer games. Now? Outside of Battlefield and Call of Duty, I don’t see myself dipping into multiplayer DLC. Especially for shooters.
Bethesda knows convincing players to buy multiplayer DLC is harder these days. Their solution? PartyPlay. If you’re in a party with someone who owns premium DLC, you can play any of the premium maps as long as you stay together. It’s not the perfect solution, but it’s an interesting way of doing it. Hell, I hope it’s something Call of Duty and Battlefield look at in the future.
