Another Mortal Kombat is upon us. This time, it’s Mortal Kombat X. Following weeks of teasing, NetherRealm Studios has officially announced Mortal Kombat X and released the first trailer for it.
Sub-Zero and Scorpion pummel each other in the trailer above. It might look like it’s from a gameplay perspective, but I’m not buying those graphics until I see someone holding a controller playing it.
The X-Ray hits from the previous Mortal Kombat are returning. We see Sub-Zero take a nasty hit to the midsection following a teleport kick from Scorpion.
It looks like NetherRealm is taking a few features from its last fighting game, Injustice: Gods Among Us. Sub-Zero breaks off a tree limb and freezes it before smacking Scorpion across the face with it.
Mortal Kombat X is long overdue. The last installment came in 2011. If the footage from the trailer is even somewhat indicative of what it will look like, not only will it play great, it will look phenomenal.
Here’s some more details from the accompanying press release.
Mortal Kombat X combines cinematic presentation with all new gameplay to deliver the most brutal Kombat experience ever, offering a new fully-connected experience that launches players into a persistent online contest where every fight matters in a global battle for supremacy. For the first time, Mortal Kombat X gives players the ability to choose from multiple variations of each character impacting both strategy and fighting style. Players step into an original story showcasing some of the game’s most prolific characters including Scorpion and Sub-Zero, while introducing new challengers that represent the forces of good and evil and tie the tale together.
Mortal Kombat X will release in 2015 on current and previous gen consoles as well as PC. Let’s hope for some real gameplay footage at E3 next week.
