Simply put, Cards are the new way to unlock new customization content in Gears of War 4 that represent a variety of items – from player customization, to Horde equipment and abilities, and Bounties that task players with completing challenges for added rewards.
Everything you receive in Gear Packs will be purely cosmetic or offer additional XP. Gears of War’s multiplayer is all about competitive balance, and The Coalition won’t do anything to upset that balance.
Card unlock items will range from characters and weapon skins to emblems. They also tease Horde equipment and abilities. They’ll reveal more about that soon.
So yeah, it sounds a lot like the Halo 5: Guardians REQ unlock system. But with one key and perfect addition.
Crafting Gears of War 4 cards
Can’t get that Gnasher skin you’ve always wanted? The Coalition feels your pain, and that’s why the created the Card Creation system. You can destroy nearly any card you earn in the game. Once destroyed, you get another in-game currency – Scrap.
The developers hedge by saying, “Using Scrap, you can create almost any card found in the game.”
This system sounds fantastic. We’ll have to wait and see which cards you can’t create and just how much Scrap you need for certain skins. Still, it’s the perfect solution for folks who don’t want to spend money looking for that one cosmetic item they want.
I would love this system on Halo 5: Guardians. 343 doesn’t want me to have the Halo 2 BR skin.
Gears of War 4 at Comic-Con
Comic-Con will get fired up later this week, and Gears of War 4 will be there. Those lucky enough to attend can expect a new playable campaign section on the show floor and versus multiplayer.
The Coalition will also host an hour-long panel titled, “Gears of War 4: Creators, Characters and Cast.” Gears co-creator Rod Fergusson will be joined by the cast and guest panelists will give us a behind-the-scenes look at the characters and story shaping the newest entry into the Gears of War franchise. The panel starts at 2:15 on Thursday at Room 6BCF.
If you can catch all the Gears action live, swing by their booth and grab a physical version of a Gear Pack. Those of you not in Los Angeles this weekend can try to win a pack on Twitter.
