Tesla Reveals the ‘D.’ The Model S P85D
Tesla Model S

Last night, Elon Musk and Tesla finally showed off the ‘D.’ The new version of the Model S, called the P85D, sports a lot of new features.

First up, the ‘D’ stands for dual motors. Tesla added a second, medium-sized motor to drive the front wheels. The two motors gives the Model S P85D nearly 700 horsepower and 0-60 in just 3.2 seconds.

The second motor also extends the car’s range to 275 miles on a single charge. The 85D, the non-performance model, can go 295 miles on a single charge.

Other new features include Autopilot technology. Tesla finished development on the tech a bit sooner than expected and will go ahead and launch it with the new Model S.

This system uses a series of sensors and cameras to look out for stop signs, traffic lights and other vehicles. Sounds cool, looks incredible. Check out this video from SlashGear showing off the autopilot system.

Besides changing lanes and observing traffic signs, The D can even park itself. There goes the YouTube clips of people plowing into other cars in a seemingly easy parking scenario.

All total, there will be three different models of the new car. The P85D is expected to start shipping in December. The other two models will ship in February.

Much has been made of Elon Musk’s initial tweet teasing the ‘D.’ Since October 1, Tesla shares saw a major spike. But, the old stock adage – ‘buy the rumor, sell the news,’ showed up in a big way today. Shares are down nearly 6% right now as investors react to last night’s reveal.

Hands-free driving and a fast car don’t come cheap. The base price of the P85D stands at just over $120,000.
