Tom Cruise is back in the pilot seat, and this time he doesn’t need a wingman. No Goose. But he’s still dangerous in the upcoming American Made. Based on the exploits of Barry Seal, it tells the story of pilot hired by the CIA and DEA into one of the largest covert operations in US history.
Can you go wrong with an action film featuring Tom Cruise? It helps the film reunites him with Doug Liman, who directed Edge of Tomorrow. Other cast members include Domhnall Gleeson, Sarah Wright, E. Roger Mitchell, Jesse Plemons, Lola Kirke, Alejandro Edda, Benito Martinez, Caleb Landry Jones and Jayma Mays.
Who Was Barry Seal?
Expect the film to take a bit of creative license with the story, but the man’s life is insane. Reading over his Wikipedia entry, you can see he was instrumental as an informant for the DEA and running covert ops for the CIA. He was an actual pilot, though he was fired from TWA. The trailer implies he was recruited from the airline.
From there he started running drugs for the Medellin Cartel earning up to $500,000 per flight. Pretty sure a commercial airline pilot isn’t pulling that in.
In the end, his testimony against the cartels put a price on his head, and he was assassinated in Baton Rouge, LA on February 19, 1986.
It’s a hell of a story and one which seems tailor-made for Tom Cruise’s brand of zaniness. American Made lands in theaters on September 29. Now about the Top Gun sequel…
