Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice was always going to make a ton of money. That was never in doubt. I mean, it’s Batman vs. Superman. What DC fan wasn’t going to see it? Moviegoers didn’t let negative reviews sway them from going to the theaters in droves this Easter weekend.
Early studio estimates (via Variety) have the DC superhero flick pulling in more than $170.1 million. It also debuted strongly overseas notching another $254 million across 66 markets. China made up a nice chunk with $57.3 million and became the best debut for a Warner Bros. movie.
How does Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice stack up in the top 10 for best opening weekends? It looks like it’s in sixth place, tucked in front of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows – Part 2 and behind Iron Man 3. Here’s how the top 10 looks now.
1. Star Wars: The Force Awakens
2. Jurassic World
3. Marvel’s The Avengers
4. Avengers: Age of Ultron
5. Iron Man 3
6. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice
7. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2
8. The Dark Knight Rises
9. The Dark Knight
10. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire
Did you see it?
I saw the early reviews and the 29% Rotten Tomatoes score before I went on Friday. Those put my expectations in check. After watching it, I couldn’t believe just how boring it was. It shocked me. Hell, I even yawned during the movie.
It wasn’t all bad, though. Affleck’s Batman was a highlight for me. The action scene where he goes to save Superman’s mom feels like it was ripped straight of the Batman: Arkham Knight game. But don’t get me started on how Superman’s mom, Martha, ties into the story. I thought I was going to shake my head off my shoulders.
And Wonder Woman was great. The music that plays when she starts facing off against Doomsday is badass. But that was about the only piece music I remember outside of the rehashed Superman theme. I was expecting much more with Hans Zimmer at the helm again. Or maybe it was because the rest of the movie was so damn boring I didn’t notice.
You know Batman v Superman was bad when one of the only highlights was seeing the Lego Batman trailer.
The big unknown going forward is what kind of legs will Batman v Superman have. I’m curious to see how big of a drop we see for the second weekend. I don’t see word of mouth working in the movie’s favor.
Despite the bore fest that is Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, I’m still looking forward to Suicide Squad and the Wonder Woman film. And please Ben Affleck, get to work ASAP on a Batman movie.
What did you think of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice? Did you like it? Or, do you agree with most critics who didn’t?
