Can a video game movie finally be great? 2016 brings two of the biggest gaming franchises to the silver screen – Warcraft and Assassin’s Creed. Late last night, the first trailer for ‘Assassin’s Creed dropped. And it looks great. Not the best song choice, but what’s on the screen is getting me pumped to see more.

Assassin’s Creed, like Warcraft, benefits from a solid cast. Raise your hand if you want to see Warcraft just because Ragnar Lothbrok is in it? Ok, so I also played WoW, but having Travis Fimmel is an instant plus.

In Assassin’s Creed, Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard headline a cast including Jeremy Irons, Brendan Gleeson and Ariane Labed.

I’m diggin’ the new Animus

The Animus allows characters to access and live through their ancestors’ memories. In the game, this was done by simply strapping a person into a chair with the machine surrounding them.

Think something like the contraption Neo uses in The Matrix. Same kind of setup.

In the movie, the Animus doesn’t keep the person immobile. We see Fassbender’s character reacting in the present day to what’s going on hundreds of years prior. It’s a much more compelling visualization of the Animus machine and should make modern scenes easier to watch. It sure beats staring at Fassbender’s eyes twitching while he sits in a chair.

Plus, it will help draw us in when Fassbender inevitably kicks some ass in the present setting. Watching him act out all the moves will look cooler than him waking up saying he knows kung fu.

Is 2016 the year we see a great video game movie?

We won’t know until we see them, but I’m hopeful we can go 2 for 2. After seeing this trailer, I’ll be at the theaters on day one. I’ve always been a sucker for the historical settings of Assassin’s Creed, and I can’t wait to see how this adaptation works. I just hope a healthy chunk of the movie takes place in the past. But with the way the Animus is being portrayed, it wouldn’t bother me if a good chunk takes place in the present day.

Assassin’s Creed Just Can’t Skip a Year

I was never a fan of the present setting in the games, but the Animus portrayal looks great here. I’m crossing my fingers for Assassin’s Creed to be a hit so we can hopefully get an adaptation of Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag.
